What is paint correction?

Paint correction, simply put, is the process of correcting surface defects and imperfections in a vehicle’s finish. Here at Clutch, we believe that correcting these imperfections is a dance between art and science. Our specialists have spent countless hours fine tuning various correction methods to achieve the best possible finish, while removing the smallest amount of paint possible.

In order to correct the imperfections, and leave your vehicle with a flat, mirror-like finish, the paint must be leveled. In order to achieve this, minute amounts of paint must be removed. Our specialists practice extreme caution whenever polishing imperfections from your beloved vehicle. For more detailed information on the general process for paint correction, continue reading below.

The heavily oxidized, dull single stage paint on this red Acura was wet-sanded, treated with a pure moisturizing polish, and then machine polished to a vibrant shine.

Correction Process

Our specialists know that your vehicle is a source of great pride and joy for our clients. Our paint correction processes have been refined through years of experience, practice and testing. Every vehicle is different, though, and will require differing approaches, products and techniques to achieve your desired results.

Our process begins with a complete exterior decontamination, which leaves the finish surgically clean. Then, a detailed condition assessment of your vehicle’s finish is performed, including taking detailed paint thickness measurements across each panel.* We then perform a few small areas of correction, testing different approaches, products and techniques to determine which will provide the best results within your desired budget.

Then, with the optimum plan of action in place, we thoroughly polish your paint to remove and correct the imperfections noted in the assessment. Upon completion of the correction, your vehicle’s finish will have restored shine, improved reflectivity and stunning depth of gloss. We then apply a durable sealant or coating to protect your vehicles finish from the elements and future imperfections for a period from 3-months to 5-years or longer!

Special care notes

Once your vehicle has been corrected, the finish will look incredible, and you’ll want to do everything you can to keep it clean. Included with your correction package is a packet that includes detailed after-care instructions to preserve your investment, and ensure the sealant or coating lasts. Also included in your post-correction packet will be a detailed report of pre- and post-correction and post-coating paint thickness measurements.

It is important to note several key Dos and Don’ts for caring for your vehicle after it has been corrected. Do exercise care when cleaning. Use only gentle wash methods as outlined in your after-care instructions. Don’t use automatic car washes—even touchless ones—as they contain harsh chemicals and dirty was media that can strip off your protective coating and reintroduce imperfections.

The best way to ensure proper maintenance of your corrected and coated vehicle is to take advantage of Clutch’s periodic maintenance program. We offer a maintenance program to our correction customers to keep your vehicles clean and free of imperfections. This program also ensures that your coating lasts as it should, and continues to provide protection for its prescribed period. Take advantage of our maintenance program, now!
